Understanding canine blood transfusions

Many dog owners do not know that dogs can receive blood transfusions, or that healthy dogs can give blood for others. If your dog is facing a possible transfusion, the terms can move fast and feel overwhelming. This guide walks through what a transfusion is, when a dog might need one, and the questions worth bringing to your veterinary team, in plain language and without judgment.

What is a canine blood transfusion?

A blood transfusion gives a dog blood, or a specific part of blood, from a donor dog. Vets rarely give whole blood. More often they give the one component a dog is missing, which is safer for the patient and means one donor dog can help more than one patient.

The components you may hear about include:

  • Packed red blood cells carry oxygen, and are used when a dog is severely anemic.

  • Plasma carries clotting factors and proteins, and is used for bleeding or clotting problems.

  • Cryoprecipitate is concentrated from plasma for specific clotting-factor deficiencies.

  • Platelet products help blood clot, and are used when platelets are very low.

When might a dog need one?

A transfusion is usually a supportive step while the underlying problem is treated. The component a dog receives depends on what the body is short of. The groupings below are a general starting point, not medical advice, and should be reviewed by your veterinarian.

  • Blood loss, often treated with red cells or plasma: trauma or acute bleeding, surgical blood loss, bleeding tumors such as splenic hemangiosarcoma, and rodenticide poisoning.

  • Destruction of red cells, often treated with packed red cells: immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), tick-borne disease such as babesiosis and ehrlichiosis, and certain toxins such as zinc, onion, and garlic.

  • Low production of red cells, often treated with packed red cells: bone marrow suppression, chronic kidney disease, and marrow cancers.

  • Clotting and platelet disorders, often treated with plasma, cryoprecipitate, or platelets: von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia.

Questions to ask your vet

Bringing a few questions to your appointment helps you take an active role in your dog's care. You might ask:

  • Which blood component do you recommend, and what is it correcting?

  • What are you hoping the transfusion will do, and how will we know if it worked?

  • What are the risks, and what signs should I watch for afterward?

  • Is blood typing or cross-matching being done first?

  • What does this cost, and are there options if cost is a barrier?

How dogs give blood

The blood used in transfusions comes from healthy donor dogs, often through volunteer donor programs and veterinary blood banks. A calm, eligible dog can help several other dogs. Project David's donor program, The 450 Club, is named for the roughly 450 milliliters a dog can safely give.
